Background: INTRODUCTION: Henley Royal Regatta, one of the sporting highlights of the English summer, entered its final day on Sunday (5 July). It was a day on which sporting history was made, with women's rowing teams taking part in the competition for the first time.

SYNOPSIS: It was a rather cold and windy day for boating, but that did not deter spectators from enjoying the scene in traditional fashion.

British teams won most of the prestige events. A combined crew of the London Rowing Club and the Thames Tradesmen is seen here leading in the final of the Stewards' Challenge Cup. They easily beat the American Vesper Club.

But the event which drew most interest was the first-ever women's race at Henley. Here are Canadian students Lisa Roy and Janice Mason leading American sisters Julia and Charlotte Geer in the Women's Invitation Double Sculls.

They went on to win, although American rowers got their revenge later, beating the Canadian team in the Coxed Fours.

Princess Grace of Monaco was there to present the awards, bringing Henley Regatta to an end for another year. British crews took the trophies for nine of the 16 finals, including Henley's top prize, the Grand Challenge Cup. Of the other seven, Americans took four.
