Background: Airline pilot representatives met on Thursday (15th June) with United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim to discuss their demands for international action against hijackers of civil aircraft and the countries that support and harbour them.

The meeting failed however to produce a solution satisfactory to the pilots' representatives, and the one-day world-wide strike of pilots in support of their demands will go ahead as planned on Monday (19th June).

The decision was announced this morning (Friday) by Ols Forsberg, President of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA) and leader of the pilots' delegation at the meeting last night with Dr. Waldheim. The announcement specifically mentions "the unsatisfactory outcome of the talks" with the U.N. Secretary-General.

The strike is called for 24 hours from 0600 G.M.T. on Monday (19th June), and IFALPA hopes that it will effectively ground all major airlines.

IFALPA was hoping that Dr. Waldheim would call a meeting of the Security Council today to discuss the hijacking problem, in particular to introducing "enforcement measures against countries that do not fulfil their obligations" under existing international convertions aimed at stamping out hijacking.
