Background: THE VATICAN ECUMENICAL COUNCIL STARTED ITS THIRD SESSION IN ROME TODAY (MONDAY) WHEN POPE PAUL AND 24 OTHER BISHOPS CELEBRATED MASS IN SAINT PETERS BEFORE THE ASSEMBLED 2,500 FATHERS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.

THE POPE, WEARING A PRECIOUS MITRE, WAS CARRIED INTO THE BASILICA - THE WORLD'S BIGGEST CHURCH - ON HIS PORTABLE THRONE. THE BISHOPS WHO CELEBRATED MASS WITH THE POPE INCLUDED REPRESENTATIVES FROM FRANCE, SPAIN, THE CONGO, IVORY COAST, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, INDIA, THE UNITED STATES AND LATIN AMERICA. THEY RECITED THE CONSECRATION TOGETHER OVER THE SAME BREAD AND WINE AT THE LARGE SQUARE-SHAPED ALTAR. IT WAS A UNIQUE CEREMONY, SYMBOLIC OF THE COUNCIL'S ULTIMATE PURPOSE - CHRISTIAN UNITY.

IN HIS SPEECH THE POPE PROMISED THAT EH COUNCIL WOULD GIVE MORE POWER TO BISHOPS, BUT WOULD AT THE SAME TIME CONFIRM PAPAL SUPREMACY. (LAST MONTH IN HIS FIRST ENCYCLICAL, POPE PAUL EXPRESSED GREAT 'DISTRESS' THAT PAPAL SUPREMACY WAS BEING REGARDED AS A STUMBLING BLOCK TO UNITY BY OTHER CHRISTIAN CHURCHES).

HE TOLD THE OBSERVERS FROM OTHER CHRISTIAN CHURCHES THAT HE WOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO END 'THE LONG, SAD HISTORY OF DISUNITY'. MEANWHILE IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT THE ORTHODOX PATRIARCH OF CONSTANTINOPLE HAS APPOINTED THREE OFFICIAL OBSERVERS TO THE COUNCIL FOR THE FIRST TIME.

POPE PAUL SAID HE WAS DELIGHTED TO WELCOME THE FIRST WOMEN IN HISTORY TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ASSEMBLY OF THIS KIND. THEY WILL BE ADMITTED TO TAKE PAT IN DEBATES ON QUESTIONS WHICH CONCERN WOMEN.

THE POPE CONCLUDE BY ASSURING OBSERVERS FROM OTHER CHRISTIAN CHURCHES - INCLUDING RUSSIAN ORTHODOX, ANGLICANS AND LUTHERANS - "OF OR EVERY PURPOSE AND HOPE TO BE ABLE ONE DAY TO REMOVE EVERY OBSTACLE, EVERY MISUNDERSTANDING, EVERY HESITANCY THAT STILL PREVENTS US FROM FELLING FULLY OF ONE HEART AND SOUL IN CHRIST".

IN HIS SPEECH THE POPE ALSO SENT GREETINGS "TO THOSE WHOM LACK OF FREEDOM STILL PREVENTS FROM COMING TO THIS COUNCIL".

(THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL WAS FIRST CONVENED TWO YEARS AGO BY POPE JOHN. MOST OBSERVERS THINK THERE WILL BE A FOURTH - AND POSSIBILITY A FIFTH SESSION BEFORE IT FINISHES ITS WORK.)
