Background: A series of gas explosions ripped through a main square in northern Madrid on Monday night (25th June) injuring at least thirty people. Two telephone repairmen working nearby, at the time, were seriously burned.

The blasts which tore a large hole in main road, and buckled a flyover bridge, sent residents in the area rushing into the streets in their night clothes.

The National Institute of Biological Research nearby was seriously damaged by fire and by a secondary explosion in a laboratory where plastics and chemicals were stored.

The explosions, on the edge of the fashionable Plaza de la Republica Argentina, were apparently caused by igniting gas in underground pipes.

About two hundred patients at a nearby hospital were evacuated - many of them on stretchers. Residents who fled their homes after the explosions were not allowed to return home the following day as a precautionary measure.

SYNOPSIS: Gas explosions in main square of Madrid on Monday night injured at least thirty people. Two telephone repairmen working nearby at the time were seriously burned.

Residents living near the Plaza de la Republica Argentina ran into the streets in their nightclothes. About two hundred patients from a nearby hospital were also evacuated - some of them on stretchers.

Most of the injuries were not serious - mainly shock, cuts and bruises.

In day time the damage could be clearly seen. Preliminary investigations have attributed the explosions to gas igniting in underground pipes.

The residents who fled their homes around the fashionable square were not allowed back the following day. Officials said this was a precautionary measure.

Apart from the damage to the pavement and roads, a flyover bridge was buckled and power and telephone supplies were cut it the immediate area.

The National Institute of Biological Research nearby was seriously damaged by fire and by a secondary explosion in a laboratory where plastics and chemicals were stored. Police were already clearing the area around the square when the blasts began. They were warned of gas leaks by men working on Madrid'g new underground railway. Madrid's Governor later said the prompt police action had avoided greater casualties.
