Background: Prince Charles was among the competitors in the Britannic Cup sailing race at Cowes yesterday (Tuesday). After a good start he finished well down in the Flying Fifteen class. Prince Philip had been expected to compete, but decided to sail for pleasure only.

Prince Philip is Admiral of the Royal Yacht squadron. He had his first sail in Cowes Week in Yeoman XVIII, chartered from a fellow yacht admiral, Owen Aisher, of the Island's (Isle of Wight) yacht club.

Prince Charles was accompanied by John Collins, a local fireman who has been given a week's special leave to crew and advise in place of Uffa Fox, the Royal Family's sailor friend who is forbidden by his doctor to do any strenuous exercise.

The Admiral's Cup race is running at the same time. And at the Royal Yacht Squadron last night a protest committee upheld the protest by Australia's Koomooloo against Britain's Cervantes, arising out of an incident just before the start of Monday's round the buoys race in the Solent. The protest had been adjourned from the morning because several of the witnesses had gone afloat.

The main event of the day was the race for the Britannic Cup, one of the week's two principal trophies, won by Arthur Slater's Prospect of Whitby in this race, Prince Philip's yacht finished 50th.
