  • Description

MR. WILSON INTERVIEWED (SOF) AT HIS NEWS CONFERENCE.

TRANSCRIPT: MR. WILSON: "BELT UP, WILL YOU!"

MR WILSON: "THIS IS OF COURSE A BRITISH RESPONSIBILITY AND WE ARE DISCHARGING THAT RESPONSIBILITY - I HAVEN'T FINISHED YET - AND THIS IS WHAT I HAVE SAID TO THE HOUSE OF COMMON IN BRITAIN. BUT I HAVE ALSO SAID TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS THAT WHILE IT IS A BRITISH RESPONSIBILITY IT IS A PROBLEM OF WORLD CONCERN, AND THAT IS WHY: I AM GLAD TO BE HERE TO LISTEN TO THE VIEWS OF OUR COMMONWEALTH COLLEAGUES ON ALL THE ISSUES INVOLVED. BUT OURS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY."

INTERVIEWER: "PRIME MINISTER, IS THERE LIKELY TO BE ANY CHANGE IN BRITISH POLICY AFTER THE TALKS AT THE CONFERENCE?"

MR. WILSON: "I'M ASKED IF THERE'S LIKELY TO BE ANY CHANGE OF BRITISH POLICY AS A RESULT OF THE CONFERENCE WHICH IS BEING HELD HERE IN LAGOS. I'VE SAID HOW GLAD I AM TO BE HERE TO LISTEN TO THE VIEWS OF MY COMMONWEALTH COLLEAGUES......"

(BABBLE OF VOICES. MR. WILSON TRIES TO SPEAK.)

Background: THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTERS' CONFERENCE ON RHODESIA WHICH BEGAN IN LAGOS, NIGERIA, TODAY (TUESDAY) HEARD A STATEMENT BY MR. HAROLD WILSON, THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, THAT BRITAIN WOULD USE FURTHER ECONOMIC METHODS IF NECESSARY TO TOPPLE THE RHODESIAN REGIME. EARLIER IN LAGOS, MR. WILSON ATTENDED A LIVELY NEWS CONFERENCE AT WHICH EXCITED NEWSMEN SCARCELY ALLOWED HIM TIME TO ANSWER ANY OF THEIR QUESTIONS.

THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT TO THE COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE TODAY WAS IN REPLY TO SHARP CRITICISM FROM SIR ALBERT MARGAI, SIERRA LEONE PRIME MINISTER, WHO CALLED FOR IMMEDIATE MILITARY ACTION TO CRUSH MR. IAN SMITH'S REGIME IN RHODESIA. MR. WILSON SAID IT WAS BRITAIN'S POLICY TO BRING DOWN THE RHODESIAN REGIME WITHOUT HEAVY BLOODSHED AND CHAOS, AND THAT THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED BY ECONOMIC MEANS WHICH WERE ALREADY HAVING A DRASTIC EFFECT ON THE RHODESIAN ECONOMY.

MR WILSON'S RECEPTION AT THE PRIME MINISTERS' CONFERENCE IS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN QUIET AND COURTEOUS. THIS IS IN SHARP CONTRAST WITH HIS LIVELY NEWS CONFERENCE IN LAGOS LAST NIGHT. SURROUNDED BY HIGHLY EXCITED NEWSMEN ALL TALKING AT ONCE, THE BRITISH LEADER FINALLY GOT A MODICUM OF QUIET BY ADVISING HIS INTERVIEWERS.

WHEN QUIET PREVAILED MR. WILSON STARTED ANSWERING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE RHODESIAN CRISIS.
