Background: Jordanian security troops cordoned-off three Amman districts yesterday (Sunday) to carry out an exhaustive search for arms which might have been left by Palestinian guerrillas during their evacuation of the capital during the last few days.

The searches were carried out in the presence of District Mukhtars (Head Men), following an announcement the previous night (Saturday, April 10) by Prime Minister Wasfi that the establishment of law and order was the prerequisite for the country's development. Earlier the same day, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Central Committee announced that seven of Amman's districts had been cleared of the Commandos' heavy arms - and that withdrawal of the rest would be completed in two days.

The Government has also announced that it is studying plans to make the possession of illegal arms an offence punishable by death and not just imprisonment.

Some arms and ammunition were found during yesterday's search and exhibited to he press by the Security Forces.

SYNOPSIS: Government Security forces moved into an Amman district on Sunday to search for arms belonging to the guerrillas or their supporters.

People were asked to wait outside their homes as the searches were carried out in the presence of the district Mukhtars - or leaders. This was one of three districts to be searched following an announcement the previous night by Prime Minister Wasfi, that the establishment of law and order was a prerequisite for the country's development. His statement came after the Palestine Liberation Organisation Central Committee announced that seven of Amman's districts had been cleared of heavy arms - and that they would complete the withdrawal of Commandos and arms in the next two days. The Jordanian authorities have stressed that, as long as the Commandos keep to their evacuation plans, no one would be arrested unless a crime was committed.

Several caches of ammunition and arms were found during the search including hand grenades and various types of explosives, some of them discovered by children playing in a street.

Among arms found were rifles and sub-machine guns of Czech, Russian and Chinese make, plus ammunition. Also found were nine United States M-one rifles. Although no arrests have been made during the current searches,...the Jordanian Government is reported to be studying a plan which will make the possession of illegal arms an offence punishable by death - and not simply by jail.
