This is the 707 flight simulator at the Boeing flight training centre in 'Seattle. The simulator has a new visual system produced by General Electric which makes use of computers to generate visual impressions of the outside world.

The pictures, projected by television and reflected off mirrors to give the impression of a view to infinity, react to control movements of the simulator just as the real world would look from the cockpit of an airplane in flight.

Captain Allsopp and Captain Jones, veteran Boeing training pilots, say that the simulation of daylight operations here is two to three times better then the best in other airliner flight simulators, and they've flown them all. The value of this million-dollar system, provided for all Boeing flight simulators, is better, more realistic simulated training, so that less actual flight tine is required. Even a standard instrument landing approach like this ends as such approaches do in real life, with the airplane breaking out of the clouds. The pilot can see immediately the effect of any errors -- with the "airplane" stopped in flight, if desired, while the instructor explains what was done wrong. Then they can continue, and do the manoeuvre again and again, perfecting skills.

Visual flight simulation -- yet another tool to help train pilots who fly Boeing jetliners with the airlines of the world.

NOTE TO TV STATION PERSONNEL: This material originally was recorded on videotape for technical reasons. Quality has been affected by converting it to film In overall cockpit shots, light level of the computer-generated scene was too low to be recorded.
