Background: The President of Ghana and Benin have agreed to strengthen bonds between their two West African countries by re-opening a joint commission of co-operation. The move follows talks between Ghana's President Hilla Limann and President Mathieu Kerekou in Benin last Friday (17 May).

SYNOPSIS: Ghana's President Hilla Limann received a warm welcome when he flew into the Benin capital, Cotonou, for friendship talks.

It was the first time a head of state from Ghana had visited Benin since the armed forces led by Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings seized power in Accra in September last year. The talks between the two leaders covered co-operation in several areas including transport, tourism, telecommunications, the free movement of goods and people, and culture. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the West African economic community.

A general agreement between the two countries was signed. The President also praised the new Government in Zimbabwe and re-stated support for the guerrilla war against apartheid in Southern Africa. Benin and Ghana, they said, will continue to support the Organisation for African Unity.
