Background: President Amahdou Ahidjo and members of the government ended the old year in Cameroun by exchanging greetings and wishes for success in the coming year. A reception to mark the event was also attended by members of the country's foreign diplomatic corps.

SYNOPSIS: The ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in the country's capital, Yaounde. Members of the National Union of Cameroun -- the NUC, which is the country's only political party -- and other leading government officials were on hand to pay their respects to the Head of State.

The Vice-president of the NUC, John Ngu Foncha, let the procession. In his address to the President, he praised recent developments in the country, especially within the social services.

President Ahidjo also exchanged best wishes with the Italian Ambassador, Signor Gudio Natali, the longest-serving Ambassador in Cameroun and d???yen of the diplomatic corps. Later, in his New Year's message, President Ahidjo called on Britain to do 'everything possible' to establish majority rule, rapidly, in Rhodesia. He also expressed his regrets over the Geneva conference's failure to produce any concrete results, and further stressed the importance of liberating the whole of the African continent.

In the interests of international peace, he hoped everyone would work towards these goals.
