Background: SENEGAL JOINED THE WORLD IN CELEBRATING LABOUR DAY ON 1 MAY. THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE U.N.T.S. - THE NATIONAL UNION OF SENEGALESE WORKERS - PARADED IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO STRUGGLED IN THE CAUSE OF THEIR COUNTRY.

IN DAKAR, A VAST PROCESSION OF WORKERS MARCHED ALONG THE AVENUE DU GENERAL DE GAULLE AND OTHER MAIN STREETS IN THE CITY. EVERY GUILD OF WORKING MEN BANNED TOGETHER, AND FILED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BEHIND THEIR REGIONAL LEADERS.

BEFORE THE MARCH, WORKERS HAD GATHERED AT 9A.M. FOR A PREPARATORY MEETING ON THE DAKAR RACECOURSE. THE PARADE HAD BEEN ORGANISED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE U.N.T.S SECRETARY-GENERAL, M. SERIGNE DIOP. SEVERAL ATHLETIC MEETINGS HAD BEEN CALLED TO MARK THE OCCASION, AND A NUMBER OF TRADITIONAL SPORTS TOOK PLACE IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

LATER THIS MONTH, DAKAR IS TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE HISTORY OF THE AFRICAN WORKING MAN. THE CENTRAL AFRICAN UNIONS ARE TO MEET THERE FOR TALKS AIMED AT ACHIEVING UNITY BETWEEN ALL AFRICAN UNIONS. THIS IMPORTANT ENCOUNTER FOLLOWS AN APPEAL MADE EARLIER THIS YEAR BY M. ALIOUNE CISSE, THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF SENGALESE WORKERS. HIS SUGGESTIONS WERE FAVOURABLY RECEIVED IN BOTH FRENCH AND ENGLISH-SPEAKING PARTS OF AFRICA.
