Background: In Kenya, a new Parliament was sworn in on Tuesday (4 December) following the November 8th general election. It was the country's first general election since the death of independence leader President Gam Kenyatta in 1978, and it brought about some major changes -- with half of the former members of Parliament failing to get re-elected.

SYNOPSIS: Parliament was full of new faces with half of the old guard Cabinet of late President Kenyatta having been voted out of office. One man to retain his seat was President Daniel Arap Moi who was sworn in as Member of Parliament for Baringo Central The new Parliament includes thirty-year old Philip Leakey, the only white Kenyan to be elected since independence. He was born in Nairobi's Langata constituency where he won an eights hundred-vote majority over his nearest African rival.

Mr. Charles Njonjo was sworn in as Attorney General. Mr. Njonjo was conspicuously outspoken during the election campaign over the importance of Kenya setting an example to the world as a multi-racial society and he had particularly welcomed the presence of a White Kenyan and an Asian in the new Parliament.

President Moi had already announced his new Cabinet which has been drastically reshaped to cope with the country's growing industrialisation. The swearing-in ceremony will take place next Wednesday (12 December) as the climax to the celebrations to mark the sixteenth anniversary of independence.
