Background: THE SECOND MAJOR FIRE AT A U.S. ATLANTIC COAST PORT IN AS MANY DAYS CAUSED DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN GBP150,000 ON THURSDAY (28 MAY) TO THE WATERFRONT OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, DAMAGING FOUR SMALL SHIPS AND DESTROYING THREE DOCKS AND TWO WAREHOUSES.

THE FIRE FOLLOWED BY ABOUT 24 HOURS A BLAZE THAT DESTROYED A LARGE PART OF THE DOCK AREA OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, PART OF THE BIG COMPLEX THAT FORMS THE PORT OF NEW YORK.

THE PORTSMOUTH FIRE STARTED ABOUT MIDNIGHT AT PINNERS POINT DOCKS ON THE ELIZABETH RIVER. ABOUT TWO HOURS LATER FIREMEN THOUGHT THEY HAD THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL, BUT THE WIND SHIFTED, CARRYING THE FIRE TO TWO ADJOINING PIERS. FIREMEN THEN HAD TO CALL IN NAVY AND COAST GUARD FIREBOATS TO HELP.

CHIEF DAMAGE WAS TO THE FERRYBOAT ACCOMAC (SHOWN IN THE FILM). THE BOAT WAS BEING CONVERTED FOR SERVICE ON THE WATERWAYS AROUND THE NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR. DAMAGE TO THE ACCOMAC WAS PUT AT ABOUT GBP100,000.
