Background: President Makarios of Cyprus - on the second day of 7-day state visit to the United Arab Republic June 5 - was warmly welcomed by the Speaker, Mr. Sayed El Sadat, when he arrived to address the U.A.R. National Assembly.
It was reported that, during his official talks with President Nasser, Archbishop Makarios would like to obtain some assurances that Cypriots in the U.A.R. - not considerably fewer than the 15,000 they were several years ago- will be permitted to continue living in Egypt and will not be adding to the considerable unemployment problem in Cyprus.
On his side, President Nasser was said to hope that the Makarios Government would become less favourably disposed towards trade with Israel, and also towards the increasing number of Israel tourists visiting the island.
The two Presidents will sign economic and cultural agreements before Archbishop Makarios flies back to Nicosia June 10 in a U.A.R. aircraft that has been put at his disposal. During his week's stay the Cyprus President was to visit Damascus and Alexandria.
