Background: Monsieur Francois Mitterrand, the French Socialist Party leader who returned to Paris the previous day from the Soviet Union, was among the vast crowd that attended the funeral of Jacques Duclos, the veteran Communist.

Monsieur Duclos died on Friday (25 April) aged 78 and his funeral took place in Paris on Tuesday (29 April).

The Communists turned the occasion at the Pere Lachaise cemetery into a peaceful working class demonstration and the socialist Party leadership decided to join in.

Several leading Communists delivered funeral orations -- among them Monsieur Georges Marchais, the Secretary-General of the French Communist Party.

Monsieur Duclos was one of the longest-surviving members of the French Communist Party, having joined at its formation in 1920.

After a lifetime of political activity, he gained considerable fame at the end of his career when he polled a fifth of the vote in the first round of the 1969 Presidential elections following the departure of President de Gaulle.

He leaves a widow, Giberte Duclos, whom he married in 1937. She is also a Communist.
