Background: TRAGEDY TODAY (SUNDAY) MARRED THE PRELIMINARY TRIALS FOR THE 24-HOUR LE MANS WHICH BEGAN YESTERDAY WITH SEVERAL DRIVERS BREAKING LAST YEAR'S LAP RECORDS. BELGIAN RACING DRIVER LUCIEN BIANCHI WAS KILLED WHEN HIS 3-LITRE ITALIAN ALFA ROMEO CRASHED DURING A PRACTICE RUN. HIGHLIGHT OF YESTERDAY'S TRIALS WAS A PRELIMINARY RUN BY WEST GERMAN DRIVER ROLD STOMMELEN.

STOMMELEN, DRIVING A NEW 4.5-LITRE PORSCHE 917, TOPPED THE DAY'S PRACTICE TIMES WHEN HE SMASHED HIS OWN LAP RECORD.

HE COVERED THE 13.46 KILOMETRES (8.35 MILES) OF THE COURSE IN 3 MINUTES 30.7 SECONDS -- 7.4 SECONDS FASTER THAN THE RECORD HE SET WHEN FINISHING THIRD IN LAST YEAR'S RACE.

FOUR OTHER DRIVERS ALSO IMPROVED LAST YEAR'S LAP RECORD. THEY WERE JOHNNY SERVOZ-GAZIN, OF FRANCE, IN A MATRA (3 MINUTES 33.9 SECONDS), PAUL HAWKINS, OF AUSTRALIA, IN LOLA (o(3 MINUTES 35.2 SECONDS), KURT AHRENS, OF WEST GERMANY, IN A PORSCHE (3 MINUTES 35.3 SECONDS), AND CHRIS AMON, OF NEW ZEALAND, IN FERRARI, (3 MINUTES 37.8 SECONDS.).

BIANCHI, CAR NUMBER 15, CRASHED ON THE HUNAUDIERES STRAIGHT, ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS PARTS OF THE LE MANS CIRCUIT, AND THE SCENE OF MANY ACCIDENTS IN PAST YEARS.

THE TRIALS WERE CONTINUING AFTER THE CRASH DEBRIS WAS CLEARED FROM THE TRACK.

THE 1969 LE MANS ENDURANCE RACE WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 14 AND 15.
