Background: Argentina needing a win to ensure that they would stay in the World Cup, managed only a draw against strongly fancied Italy, in Stuttgart Wednesday (6/19). The South Americans can still qualify on goal average, however.
The two goals come in the first half. Argentina went ahead with a fine goal by Haussman. He slipped through the Italian defence to score from close range, in the 19th minute.
The Italians equalized in the 35th minute, when a mix-up in the Argentine defence gave them a goal from Perfumo.
The midfield playing by both sides dominated the game in the second half and there were few scoring chances for either side. The close marking by both teams keeping the chances for goals to a minimum. In the remaining games in their section, Italy will face Poland and Argentina will play Haiti, who lost 7-0 to Poland Wednesday (6/19).
