Background: VISNEWS cameras flew into Brazil's vast hinterland to film Brazilian President Kubitshek operating a tractor felling the last tree on the 1,255 mile highway being constructed
through one of the most dense jungles in the world..the AMAZON.

Linking the new capital Brazilian and the north east city of Belem, Capital of
the state of Para, the highway is one of Kubitshek's promises in his 50 years of
progress in 5 years of administration policy.

Five air strips have had to be constructed so that food and equipment can be
transported to the site...no other method was possible through the impenetrable
    vegetation.

The Brazilian-Belem road is the second part of the Trans-Brazil road starting at
Porto Alegre near the Uruguayan border. The first section, Porto
Alegre-Braziliana, is already being used by traffic.

Construction crews from Belem and Braziliana worked through the jungle towards
each other...this was their meeting. No time has been given for opening to
    traffic.
