    Background: AUSTRALIA AT PRESENT HAS ITS THIRD CONTINGENT OF POLICE IN CYPRUS HELPING THE UNITED NATIONS FORCES TO MAINTAIN PEACE. THE FIRST CONTINGENT WENT TO CYPRUS IN 1964; THE PRESENT GROUP IS EXPECTED TO STAY THERE UNTIL ITS TERM IS COMPLETED IN MAY NEXT YEAR.

    EACH GROUP HAS BEEN MADE UP OF VOLUNTEERS FROM THE POLICE FORCES IN THE SIX AUSTRALIAN STATES. THE BALANCE HAVE COME FROM THE COMMONWEALTH POLICE, MAKING A TOTAL OF 40 MEN.

    THE PRESENT GROUP FLEW TO CYPRUS FROM SYDNEY ON MAY 23 THIS YEAR AFTER THEY WERE ALL SWORN IN AS MEMBERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH FORCE.

    LAST YEAR, AUSTRALIA CONTRIBUTED 200,000 DOLLARS (US) TO THE UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL VOLUNTARY FUND FOR ITS PEACE FORCE ON CYPRUS.
