    New Delhi authorities on Monday (24 January) called for an interim report within four days form a commission investigating a case in which 93 people have so far died from drinking poisoned liquor.

    The victims of the drink, suspected of containing methylated spirit, had attended a wedding party in a slum area of the city on Saturday (22 January). The guests bought illicit liquor from a nearby bootlegger, when drink supplies ran low at the party. The bootlegger was later found dead in his shop, along with his mother and brother.

    There is no prohibition in the Indian capital, out the nigh cost of good liquor leads to a brisk trade in illicit drink for the poor. Liquor poisoning is common in India, and last year more than 78 people died in Bombay in a similar tragedy.

    SYNOPSIS: Guests at a wedding party in a New Delhi slum ran short of drink and bought illicit liquor from a nearby bootlegger on Saturday. Ninety-three people have died so far as a result, with several others still in critical condition in hospital.

    Doctors at city hospitals said the victims died from methyl poisoning, and officials fear many more people may be lying poisoned in their homes. The bootlegger who sold the liquor was found dead in his shop.

    One doctor said that the poisoning strikes thirty-six hours after the concoction has been downed. New Delhi police have already started raiding illicit shops and picking up bootleggers in a bid to prevent further such incidents.
