    Background: LA PAZ, BOLIVIA

Specially-trained dogs are leading the crackdown on the illicit cocaine trade in Bolivia. Whereas in the past, search dogs were made into cocaine addicts, the Bolivian authorities have now taught them to find the drug in return for various rewards. The dogs are being used at civilian checkpoints, such as La Paz airport, and to uncover large hauls buried in remote mountain country. The government of General Celso Torrelio came to power last year pledged to wipe out the drug trade which it accused the previous government of General Garcia Meza, of involvement in. The lucrative cocaine trade is regarded as the chief stumbling block to good relations with the United States, because a large proportion of the cocaine reaches North America.
