    Background: The 1959 underwater fishing world championship at Malta August 13-18th began with a ceremonial parade in Valetta reviewed by the Governor Sir Guy Grantham and the Metropolitan Archbishop Sir Michael Gonzi, Next day August 14th - a day devoted to boating and fishing beneath the waves before the contest began - a Visnews cameraman donned his underwater gear to follow the frogmen and met his death through a reported malfunctioning of his aqua-lung.

    Entrants from 19 nations competed for eight hours August 16 - to decide the national and individual championships. Britain entered a team, Australia was represented by one man in the individual competition. Favourites for the title: France, last year's winners, and Italy whose frogmen won fame in during wartime exploits.

    This year's competing teams include West Germany; Spain; U.S.; Belgium; Switzerland; Holland; Greece; Morocco; Yugoslavia, Monaco; Tripoli; Britain; Portugal; Brazil and Tunis. Previous winners were: Italy (in Yugoslavia 1957), Spain (in France 1956), France (in Spain 1955), and Spain (in Italy 1954).

    The championships are under the patronage of Commandant Jacques Yves Cousteau, the French explorer of "Silent World" fame.
