Background: Former Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth tonight lies virtually submerged in Hongkong Harbour. Yesterday fire swept through the ship reducing it to a mess of twisted metal. The QE-1 was undergoing a refit before starting a new career as a floating university. The fire started early in the afternoon on 'B' deck an quickly swept through the ship. Workmen on the boat at the time had to jump for their lives into the sea. No cause of the fire has yet-been given. Today fire fighting vessels stood by as gradually the QU-1 fell onto its side. When oil began leaking from ruptured fuel tanks detergent was sprayed onto the water.
