    Background: African representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) met for the start of a two-week conference in Yaounde, the Cameroun capital, on Wednesday (3 March).

    Representatives of specialised United Nations aid agencies and 38 resident representatives of the UNDP are attending the meeting.

    UNDP director, Bradford Morse said the UNDP was determined to co-operate closely with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in it's proposed 1977-1981 African programme.

    OAU Secretary-General William Eteki Mboumoua told the delegates his presence proved his organisation was not only interested in political developments in Africa.

    Prime Minister of Cameroun, M. Paul Biya, attended the meeting.

    SYNOPSIS: The National Assembly building in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroun, where representatives of the United Nations Development programme met on Wednesday at the start of a two-week conference.

    The Organisation of African Unity Secretary-General -- William Eteki--told delegates his presence proved his organisation was not only interested in political developments in Africa. In his opening speech, UNDP Director, Bradford Morse said the UNDP was determined to co-operate closely with the OAU and the Economic Commission for Africa in the next five-year African regional programme.

    The UNDP faces a shortage of money, caused by increased costs of services and delays in payments of contributions. The delegates will also discuss aid to the countries of the Sahel, the belt of arid land across northern Africa that has been hit by drought.
