Background: Visnews filmed January 6 the President of Turkey, Celal Bayar, visiting the central district of Istanbul shattered by an explosion earlier that day.
The President watched rescue operations and clearance gangs at work. While police were investigating the cause of the explosion, clearance gangs toiled to reach the bodies of victims, trapped under the mountain of debris - the remains of one hotel, five shops, an office block and two newspaper printing buildings.
Twenty three bodies had been recovered by the following day. Some 50 people were seriously injured. the explosion, police believed, was caused by 500 lbs. of dynamite stored in one of the offices belonging to a mining company.
A packed bus passing nearby at the moment of the explosion was submerged by falling debris. Most of the passengers were injured.
Shock of the explosion brought business and traffic to a standstill. Many hundreds of relatives of people working in the shattered - the business quarter of Sirkeci - rushed fearfully to the wrecked buildings.
