Background: Grande Island in Subic Bay ... in the past a rest and recreation haven for American troops fighting in South Vietnam, is standing by to become "home" to thousands of refugees from South Vietnam.
Grand Island is part of the large United States Naval complex in the Philippines, which has been prepared to receive about 25,000 of the refugees.
Many refugees are already on the island...brought out in the past two weeks by the fixed-wing airlift...and a giant of flotilla of U.S. ships are still cruising off the South Vietnamese coast, according to military sources, and are loaded with refugees.
Most of those on Grande Island now are leaving for Guam, where they'll be checked for permission to enter the United States.
