Ten years ago Dr. Smit became South Africa's youngest Deputy Secretary of Finance and, at the age of 37, was appointed to represent South Africa as External Director of the International Monetary Fund, a post he held from 1971-75. Last year he was appointed Managing Director of Sunlam International, one of South Africa's major Afrikaner financial institutions.

Background: South African police are investigating the murders of leading economist Dr. Robert Smit and his wife. The couple were killed at their home in Springs-near Johannesburg-on Wednesday (23 November).

SYNOPSIS: The murdered man was due to have stood as a National Party candidate in the South African elections on November 30th. Following an impressive financial career, he had been tipped as a future South African Finance Minister. So far, police have not discovered a reason for the killings, though they have not ruled out the possibility that there may have been a political motive. Before his death, Dr. Smit had been out visiting constituents.

Police working on the case said that the murders had been particularly violent. Dr. Smit had been shot three times-in the head, neck and chest. His wife, Jeanne, also had three bullet wounds, and had been stabbed 14 times in the back. Inside the house slogans had been daubed in red paint on the lounge walls-with the letters 'R.A.U.' and 'T.E.M.' Police were unable to explain their meaning.

Dr. Smit's death means that the parliamentary election in Springs will be called off automatically. A by-election will be held some time next year.
