INTRODUCTION: Thousands of young people from all over the Arab world attended the fifth festival for young Arabs which was opened in the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday (20 August). It was a spectacular affair with dancing, parades and the highlight of the Festival -- a mock attack on symbolic Israeli aircraft and a tank. The congress was opened by Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad and the crowd was addressed by Arab League Secretary General Chedli Klibi.
SYNOPSIS: Thousands of young people from all over the Arab world paraded before the stands in their colourful national costumes. President Assad watched from the stands as the various national groups marched by. Also present was Arab League Secretary General Chedli Klibi.
Following the recent Libyan-US confrontation the portrait of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi held aloft by the Libyan contingent drew loud applause.
Other groups from Algerian and Lebanon were also warmly greeted by President assad and the crowd. Members of the 21-nation Arab League were at the Congress in force. The League wants an overall security pact to counter acts like Israel's raid on Iraqi nuclear installations which took place recently.
But the world of nuclear reactors seemed a long way away from these mounted tribesmen.
Mr. Klibi joined President Assad as the flags of the congress were hoisted. The military nature of the congress was emphasised by the parade of Syrian troops. Syria is planning to boost its economy over the next five years to strengthen the country for the continuing confrontation with Israel.
The confrontation was never far from the spectators' minds. The dancers struck a peaceful not but they were the prelude for the Congress's piece de resistance.
These mock Israeli jets flew overhead..
While on the ground a symbolic Israeli tank blazed in the darkness. The crew were captured to the crowds' evident approval.
And the jets were the victims of a direct hit...
President Assad called on the Arabs to unite against Israel. He was warmly applauded by the capacity crowd.
