Background: President of the Malagasy Democratic Republic, Didier Ratsiraka, officially presented his new 18 minister government and 12 mamba superior council in the capital Tananarive on 13 January.
President Ratsiraka himself was sworn in as President on 4 January.
The Malagasy Democratic Republic as such was formed after a referendum on 21 December last which approved a new constitution for the country.
The cabinet is headed by Prime Minister Joel Rekotomalala and at the presentation ceremony President Ratsiraka said he believed the two new institutions would provide "national unity" and become the backbone of a strong country which would look after the common welfare of the Malagasy people.
The new government comprises representatives from the majority of Malagasy tribes-for the fist time representatives of the Congress Party for the Independence of Madagascar- and even politicians close to former head of state Philibert Tsiranana.
Observers believe this is a true indication that president Ratsiraka is trying to bring to fruition his fervent desire for national unity.

For the first time, the Congress Party for the Independence of Madagascar is well represented and even politicians close to former head of state, Philibert Tsiranana, have entered the government.
