Roberto Moreno of Brazil won the penultimate round of the European Formula Two Championship at Donington Park, England, on August 27. Moreno was in third place until lap 36 when, along with the leader, New Zealander Mike Thackwell, and Emmanuel Pirro of Italy, he hit an oil slick. Thackwell spun out of control along with Pirro but Moreno managed to get by the other cars and the oil by driving on the grass. The Brazilian managed to hold on to take the race with a 14-second margin. Pirro was second, Christian Danner of West Germany was third and Thackwell managed to recover to finish fourth. Moreno said he was pleased with the victory because the previous week he had undergone eye surgery and did not expect to recover so soon. At Silverstone, England, British driver Johnny Dumfries scores his twelfth Formula Three victory also on August 27. Dumfries roared away from the start and built up his lead to win by 10 seconds from Canadian Allen Berg. Mario Bytten of Switzerland chased Berg during the early part of the 30-lap race but had to drop back and settle for third place after his engine started to misfire. Dumfries, 25, who had won only one of his last six races, said it was an easy race with no problems.
