Background: The Arab People's Congress met in Beirut on Wednesday (15 May) to discuss details for the World Solidarity Meeting on Lebanon, to be held in Paris at the end of this month (May).

SYNOPSIS: The congress has its headquarters in Tripoli, the capital of the Libyan Jamahiriyah. One speaker was the Palestine Liberation Organisation leader, Yasser Arafat. He was one of five Arab leaders who'd met in Tripoli a month before (April), and announced the creation of a joint military force to be stationed in Syria. Yasser Arafat condemned Washington for making its abortive bid to rescue the American hostages in Iran, then slated Egypt for allowing U.S. military aircraft to use a base there before launching their Iranian incursion.

The Palestinian leader has been one of the most persistent critics of the Egyptian-Israeli accords. He predicted the government of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat would not survive, and that Egypt would, one day, emerge from what he called "imperialist hands".
