Background: In Peking, delegates to the Chinese Parliament, the National People's Congress, have been meeting in a number of study groups to discuss a report on the Government by Chairman Hua Kuo-feng. The report includes a draft for China's economic development during the next ten years.
SYNOPSIS: Chairman Hua Kuo-fing himself attended two of the study groups to address the delegates and discuss some of his plans for the future. Some of the delegates took the opportunity of making points about the report, which supported the Chairman's ideas and plans for development in China. The Chairman made the point that China planned to reach the front rank of world powers by the end of the century.
However, he said China would never aim at superpower status, even when she became a modern and powerful socialist country.
Close to 3,500 delegates are attending the Peking Congress, the fifth Parliament to be called since the founding of the Communist State in 1949. Foreign newsmen covering the Congress have noted that several prominent Chinese who were purged during and after the country's Cultural Revolution have begun making appearances again.
The Chairman's report on the Government has not been published, but a summary has been released. In addition to studying the report and plans for the next ten years, the Congress delegates will also be giving some time to the election of state officers, and to deciding on new words for the Chinese national anthem.
