Background: President Hilla Liman of Ghana arrived in Nigeria on Thursday (27 March) for a three day visit to the country. He was met in Lagos by Nigerian President Shehu Shagari. They held talks aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries.
SYNOPSIS: The President of Ghana was also greeted at the airport by large crowds, a 21-gun salute and a display of traditional Nigerian dancing. For the President, who was elected last September, it was his first official visit to Nigeria.
Both Presidents had met for the first time a few days earlier in the Ivory Coast where leaders of five African states met to discuss declining world cocoa prices. President Liman was accompanied on this visit to Nigeria by several senior cabinet members.
The two countries have strong ties and a joint communique was signed by the two Presidents on Saturday (29 March) at the end of President Liman's visit. A state banquet and cultural show were held in his honour. The two leaders pledged to renew the Joint Economic Commission of Ghana and Nigeria.
Many Ghanaians living in Nigeria watched the President's arrival. After being introduced to Nigerian officials, the two leaders watched a display of dancing. During his visit, President Liman laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in the capital, Lagos, and visited the Tin Can Island port complex and the national museum.
