At 9 a.m. the Palace gate opened for the public and nearly 8,000 poured into the Plaza in the misty morning.
Just then, the Emperor was saying prayers at the Imperial Palace Shrine and reporting his 60th birthday to his ancestors. He then received greetings from the Empress, the Crown Prince Akihito Crown Princess Michiko, Prime Yoshi and other Imperial family members.
Later the Emperor, the Empress, the Princes and the Princess stood on the special dais set up at the back of the Plaza to wave to the cheering crowd.
They appeared on the dais three times in the morning and four times in the afternoon to respond to the people who shouted "Long Live the Emperor".
