Background: Visnews cameras were at North Sydney Swimming Pool, Australia, Jan 16, when the amazing 'new' Australian 'swim-kids' John and Ilsa Konrads gave yet a further demonstration of their aquatic prowess.
Competing in the New South Wales Swimming Championships John Konrads, holder of seven World free style swimming records, tried to beat his own World record for the 440 yards- he failed by only one tenth of a second.
14 year old Ilsa made successful unpaced attempted on World records for the 1500 meters and 1,650 yards. In an amazingly judged swim she established new records of 19 minutes 25.7 secs for the 1500 meters (37.4 secs better than previous) and took 64.3 secs of World standard for the 1,650 yards. Young Ilsa says she maintains the smoothness of her stroke by singing popular songs to herself while swimming.
After unbeaten records during the 1956 Olympic Games, and four intermediate years of practice and competition, their form at Rome's 1960 Olympic Games should be invulnerable.
