Background: Over 2,5000 R.N. matelots went ashore to see the city sites of Istanbul early this week.

They were from the visiting aircraft carrier Eagle 43,000 tons - one of three operational carriers of the Malta-based Mediterranean Fleet, from the cruiser Sheffield, 9,000 tons and the destroyer Trafalgar.

The seven year old Eagle backed the 1956 Suez Franco-British landings. Sheffield, a prewar ship, won fame on Russian convoy service in World War Two.

Flag Officer Admiral Robert Alistair Ewing during the courtesy visit took part in a wreath laying ceremony in the city, watched by British families resident in the capital.

The Eagle was open to the public. Matelots gave a party to the children of British families. Wish them were Turkish, German and French children. Their chief interest centred on Eagle's aircraft - Seahawks, Gannets, Skyraiders and Sea Venoms.

The courtesy visit was from October 17-23. The warships then were leaving for a call to Cyprus.
