Background: The Emperors of Japan and Ethiopia met for a banquet in Tokyo's moated Imperial Palace on Saturday (May 23). Emperor Haile Selassie, making a five-day visit to Japan to attend Ethiopia's national day at Expo 70, was entertained to dinner by the Japanese Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako.
Earlier, strict security precautions has been in force when Ethiopian ruler arrived at Tokyo airport. Six hundred police guarded the airport and the Emperor's route into Tokyo after an Ethiopian separatist organisation had threatened to blow up the country's pavilion at Expo 70.
The 77-year-old Ethiopian leader was met at the airport by Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Sato. He was also present Saturday's dinner, together with Japan's Crown Prince Adihito and Princess Michiko.
