Background: Three weightlifting world records were broken during the 55th Soviet championships in Moscow. All records were established in the heavyweight category.

SYNOPSIS: The competition was in the weightlifting palace, with almost two hundred sportsmen from various Soviet cities and republic taking part. Some leading lifters did not compete; they were resting before the Olympic Games.

This is Igor Nitikin about to set his world record for the Snatch in the 100 kilograms (15 stones 10 lbs)--or heavyweight-- category. He was making an additional performance because he had just won the 1980 Soviet title by lifting a total of three hundred and ninety-seven point five kilograms (876.33 lbs). Nitikin's record for this snatch was one hundred and eight-one point five kilograms (400.13 lbs).

Sadly for him, Nitikin's record lasted only a few minutes. Victor Naniyev, a twenty-five-year-old university student, snatched one hundred and eighty-two kilograms (400.18 lbs).

Then it was the turn of Sergei Poltoratskyi to put his name once more in the record books. He's won several European and world titles, and set four world records when lifting in a lighter category. Here, in the jerk, he raised two hundred and twenty seven point five kilograms (501.54 lbs). Poltoratskyi is a thirty-two-year-old physical culture teacher from Kiev, and was competing in his eleventh national championships.

This is Vladimir Marchuk, who won the title in the super heavyweight category. Here, he tries to break the world jerk record by lifting two hundred and fifty-six kilograms (564.38 lbs). The bar gets up to full arms-stretch, but he's unable to hold it. Still, the audience appreciated watching an awesome failure.
