INTRODUCTION: Tracy Austin defeated the reigning Wimbledon title-holder Chris Evert Lloyd on Sunday (23 August) to capture the Canadian Open Tennis Championship. The Californian took the 34,000 (US) dollar purse in straight sets 6-1 from her American compatriot. It was the eighth triumph for Tracy Austin in 14 matches against Chris Evert-Lloyd and her first major since suffering a back injury last winter.

SYNOPSIS: Chris Evert Lloyd in the red and white outfit was the tournament's number one seed. She had defeated Andrea Jaeger of the U.S. to win a place in the final.

Tracy Austin defeated Martina Navratilova on her way to the play-off.

The American teenager made the victory look easy with her superior speed around the court. She kept the pressure on Evert Lloyd right from the start, causing the Wimbledon champion to make many unforced errors.

Austin inflicted only the second loss Chris Evert Lloyd has suffered in 48 matches this year. Although it was a one-sided affair, this final produced point in the first set which Tracy Austin took 6-1. She took complete command of the match.

The second set also gave the spectators a feast of fast and determined play by both girls. Chris Evert Lloyd changed her tactics and resorted to drop shots while mounting a new challenge that led to a several vicious overhead volleys.

Despite the game fight back, the points did not come Evert Lloyd's way.

After breaking service in the first game of the second set, Tracy Austin dropped her service game and Evert Lloyd led for the first time 2-1. The Californian then managed two consecutive breaks, before Evert Lloyd reached 4-5 after fighting off a match point in the ninth game. Another two match points were saved in the tenth game, before Austin took the title.

After the match, Tracy Austin said she didn't expect to win so easily.
