Background: WEST BANK
On the West Bank, a further 300 Palestinian schoolgirls were taken to hospital on April 4 suffering from a mystery illness, taking the total to 800 of those who complained of the illness in the past few days. Most were released after a few hours observation. Some of the girls said they detected a strange smell and then felt drowsy. One doctor said they conducted tests for phosphor, which proved positive. An Israeli official said that the illness could be attributed to the fact that when some people complained of detecting something in the air, this affected the others around them, and acted just like any other contagious disease. There had been conflicting claims about the origin of the mystery illness, and Israeli's director-general of the Health Ministry, Mr Baruch Modan, said he had no evidence to support Palestinian claims of mass poisoning. One Arab spokesman said that the Israelis were trying to find other ways of putting pressure on his people on the West Bank. Medical specialists from the United States and the World Health Organisation arrived to examine the victims, who the Israeli authorities said were inspired by politically motivated mass hysteria, and the Palestinians said were suffering from poisoning. The doctors reserved their judgements until they had examined all those who had suffered from the illness. The Security Council of the United Nations asked the General Secretary, Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar, to investigate the outbreak. At a news conference at the United Nations, the deputy permanent Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) observer, Hatem Huseini said the illness was indicative of the policies of the Israelis towards the Palestinians. He said the only solution to the West Bank problems was an independent state for his people.
