Background: The United States Embassy in Phnom Penh has started an evacuation of almost its entire staff in a plan which should be completed by today (Monday). Other American-financed organisations like the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are following suit.
The evacuations began on Saturday (April 5th) with a full load aboard an American aid flight to Bangkok. Also on board were Ambassador Chtori Kurino and staff of the Japanese Embassy which has closed down.
Less then 20 American officials were scheduled to remain behind in Phnom Penh where the military situation has worsened for the Khmer Republic government.
