Background: All eleven crew members, including 7 stewardesses, were killed when a Trans International DC-8 jetliner crashed and burned on take off from Kennedy International airport, New York. The plane was en route to Dulles Airport, Washington, to take 250 young Europeans back to Europe from summer jobs in the United States.

The plane's tail scraped the runway as it left the ground, and the plane rose almost vertically to a height of about 300 feet, then it ??? over on its left side and plunged to earth, exploding almost immediately on impact. Emergency crews were at the crash site in 35 seconds, but there was no hope of saving anyone on board.

Trans International Airlines of Oakland, California, said the crash was the first in the airline's 22-year history and that the crew consisted of most of its senior personnel. The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m., one of the busiest times of day at the airport.

The four-engine jet was to have flown to Gatwick airport, near London, with a charter group sponsored by the American Institute of Foreign Studies.
