Background: Though he has missed most of the season through injury, Leeds United skipper Billy Bremner was the man who steered his team closer to the European Fairs Cup in tonight's (Wednesday's) semi-final clash with Liverpool. Bremner celebrated his return to the side by heading a magnificent 67-minute goal which gave Leeds the decisive edge in this first leg encounter. Liverpool, playing before their own crowd, contributed a host of near-misses nut never managed to equalise that Bremner goal.
SYNOPSIS: Leeds, in the all-white strip, kick off in the second-half of their Faire Cup semi-final with English First Division rivals Liverpool. Despite having the ground advantage in this first-leg clash, Liverpool had been unable to convert first-half pressure into goals.
And the same pattern continued after the interval. Here, a Liverpool attack is rounded off by a Hughes pass to Toshack who shoots over the bar.
Leeds captain Billy Bremner goes down after a foul. It's an anxious moment for Leeds, since Bremner has returned to the side after missing most of the current season through injury.
Giles takes the free-kick, and Bremner slips through the Liverpool defence to head a superb goal in the sixty-seventh minute.
Liverpool strike back to win a free-kick of their own. Toshack goes close.
Liverpool keep up the pressure with a corner. The ball comes out to Lindsay, but he can only head into Sprake's arms.
Smith takes a Liverpool free kick. And again Toshack is just off target.
Despite the intense pressure, Liverpool were unable to equalise. So Leeds, the current English league leaders, go into the second leg as strong favourites.
