Background: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat has urged Bangladesh to forget the past and begin a new period of Moslem unity. He made the call during a one-day visit to Bangladesh on Monday (25 February).

Sadat arrived in the Bangladesh capital of Dacca after a 24-hour visit to India for talks with Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It was the first visit to Bangladesh by an Islamic leader since it broke away from Pakistan in 1971. President Sadat made the visit at the invitation of Bangladesh prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, whom he met at the Islamic conference in Lahore, Pakistan. The visit came only 24 hours after a leading Egyptian journalist claimed that the recognition of Bangladesh by Pakistan a few days ago was largely the result of President Sadat's initiative.

Pakistan had previously insisted that the freeing of 195 Pakistani war prisoners was a prerequisite for recognition of Bangladesh.

President Sadat was met on his arrival at Dacca Airport by Sheikh Mujib and several members of his cabinet including Foreign Minister Kamal Hossain, who revealed to newsmen the remark about forgetting the past after the two leaders had a working lunch together.

Directly following the 38-nation Islamic summit President Sadat flew to New Delhi to meet Mrs. Gandhi. India had not been invited to the conference. Following his visit to Bangladesh, he left for Egypt early on Tuesday (26 February).
