Background: Incessant monsoon rains have recently caused wide spread floods in many parts of India. Floods seen in Punjab August 25/26 were the worst the northern state had suffered in 90 years. Crops were almost completely destroyed and severe flooding took place in areas covering several hundreds of square miles. Ten people were reported dead.
In the eastern state of Orissa, nearly a million people were affected by nine days of heavy flooding. Incomplete details from four districts showed that 27 had died and 2,700 square miles of land were flooded by waters from seven rivers.
The floods, caused by the torrential rains, drove thousands of poisonous snakes from their hideouts, and many snake-bite cases were reported. In many districts the bodies of tigers were seen floating in the swirling waters.
