Background: The first ambassador from the People's Republic of China to be appointed to the South American country of Venezuela, Mr. Ling Ching, arrived in the capital Caracas on Wednesday (5 November) to take up his post.
The Venezuelan Government established diplomatic relations with China in June 1974 and agreed to exchange ambassadors. However, in the last year there has only been a Charge d'Affaires representing China in the country.
On his arrival at Maiquetia Airport, Mr. Ling Ching was greeted by Venezuelan officials and local Chinese residents. Later he had talks with President Carlos Perez.
Mr. Ling, aged 52 years, has taken an interest in Venezuela for some time. He held a key position in the Maritime Rights Conference in Caracas last year.
He has compared China and Venezuela by saying their political situations are both delicate and that there should be co-operation in social and political areas.
