Background: VISNEWS filmed June 12 the Praja Socialist Party Press Conference attended by Congress Party leaders - in Trivandrum, capital of Kerala, India's only Communist-governed State; and June 13 an Opposition procession and obstruction of entry to Government offices.

During the picketing of Government offices, a prostrate woman demonstrator was forcibly removed by Indian women police. The procession through the Trivandrum was notably well-behaved for a political demonstration.

The events were part of the recently-launched opposition campaign -one of non-violent direct action - against the Communist Government of the State. There were, however, clashes between the police and crowds of demonstrators, and by June 15 eleven people were reported killed and 450 arrested.

The Opposition movement includes a variety of political parties - which have not acted in unison in the past - and the Praja Socialist Press Conference was only announced after another Opposition party had announced its own Press conference.

Early phases of the anti-Communist campaign included a standstill move in which all demonstrators ceased to carry on with their normal activities, and the agitators planned to close down all private schools in protest against the Communist Government's Education Act.

The Communist Government elected to power two years ago, declared it would not resign until the end of its term in 1962.
