The Red Brigade has been blamed for dozens of bombings and shootings. Dr. Palma's death brings the number of political killings in Italy this year in to at least four and is expected to increase Parliamentary demands for tougher action against political extremists.

Background: Left-wing urban guerrillas have claimed responsibility for the murder of an Italian magistrate outside his home in Rome on Tuesday (14 February). It was the second recent assassination of a magistrate by extremists in a wave of political violence sweeping Italy.

SYNOPSIS: The latest victim was 63-year-old Dr. Riccardo Palma, who was struck by machine-gun fire as he climbed into his car on Tuesday morning. Witnesses said three people surrounded the vehicle and one opened fire. The Red Brigade-Italy's most active left-wing guerrilla group-later claimed responsibility for killing Dr. Palma, who they described as a "slave of the multi-nationals."
The murder was seen as an apparent attempt to intimidate the judiciary only weeks before the trial of a prominent guerrilla leader. Dr. Palma had special responsibility for prisons and recently inspected jail installations in Turin where the guerrilla will be held until his trial next month. The last time he was scheduled for trial, the Red Brigade shot dead the President of the Turin Law Society, postponing the hearing.
