Background: On May 25, the second of the French Open Tennis Championship, Henri Leconte, a young local player, gave seventh seed Australian Peter Mcnamara a hard match. Mcnamara lost the first set 4-6 but recovered to take the second 6-3. In the third set, left-hander Leconte took the Australian to a tie-breaker which he eventually lost after losing ten set points. Mcnamara finally overcame the French teenager's challenge, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 7-5. Top seed Jimmy Connors did not face any real threat from fellow-American challenger Bruce Manson. Showing no sign of a recent ankle injury, Connors defeated Manson in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. The absence of last year's champion Bjorn Borg -- because of a dispute over qualifying rules -- and of Wimbledon champion John McEnroe -- because of a damaged ankle -- means Connors will probably meet second seed Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia in the final on June 5.
