Background: Meredith intvu, ??? shot outside his apartment a5 25 ?larement, near columbia U. wife at his side. film runs about 300 ft.
Meredith starts by saying he was expecting consensus support from republicans and adequate financial aid. When he failed to get this, he said, he decided to withdraw. Says it's a matter of political expediency, rather than bad faith. Says Jackie Robinson will have to answer for the statement he made about him (???t dean of CBS interjects, "he says you were in it for money?) -- but refused to say whether he will sue Robinson.
says no one pressured him or his family to get out of the race.
In my opinion...one of the next parts of the film is near the end, when Meredith says the white people have made a lot of mistakes but the Negroes are also about to make a big one. He said this in response to a question about whether he'd support Powell. Meredith didn't answer the question at any time during the interview.
Meredith went on to say that the political situation in the US is comparable to the 1850's and that this powell matter could split to country right down the middle.
